Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is arguably the oldest engineering discipline. It is a field focused on designing and constructing the environments in which humans live. Civil engineers typically focus on large construction projects such as buildings, roads, bridges, subway systems, dams, and water supply networks. Math, physics, and design are essential areas of knowledge in the field. Civil engineering has been around since the time civilizations started constructing infrastructure, huts, monuments, and such structures. The civil engineering industry has massively evolved over the course of time. From building unstable huts and muddy pathways, humans have come around to building complicated structures like bridges, dams, canals, express highways, palaces, wondrous monuments, and much more.

Well-qualified civil engineers are in high demand by various public and private sector companies. With innumerable advancements in infrastructure and private sector construction, more and more civil engineers are being recruited in both these sectors. Civil engineers do a lot more than design buildings and bridges. They can be found in the aerospace industry, automotive industry, shipbuilding industry, power industry, and many other industries wherever constructed facilities are involved. Civil engineering is an exciting profession because, at the end of the day, you can see the results of your work, whether this is a completed bridge, a high-rise building, a subway station, or a hydroelectric dam. Besides aspiring for a well-paying job you can also establish your engineering consultancy where you can be your boss and offer your services to companies that approach you for your expertise.

At Indira Gandhi Polytechnic, educating our students is our core mission, and students are our inspiration. Our students spend valuable time learning from faculty in lectures but put their knowledge to real-world use in our laboratories. Our faculty dedicate their careers to education and mentoring, to further the next generation of civil engineering researchers and professionals. The Department of Civil Engineering at Indira Gandhi Polytechnic seeks to understand the world, invent, and innovate with creative design. To address some of the greatest challenges of our time, the department uses approaches that range from basic scientific principles to complex engineering designs.
